Sometimes shitty people are just shitty people, and digging deeper only reveals more reasons not to like them. It gets a little dull when every edgy character has to be the 'charming rogue with a heart of gold' type. People complain about the characters being irredeemable pieces of shit, but sometimes, that's how I like my fiction. It's actually really cool, but the effect can be a little nauseating at times.Īs far as I can tell, they were one game away from finally nailing their artistic vision for Kane and Lynch. They decided to forego a musical score and made the camera intentionally look like a cheap cellphone recording. Basically, the idea was to give as unflinching and realistic a look at the kinds of people who would plausibly be at the centre of a bloody shootout in the middle of a crowded urban centre without any hint of romanticism. IIRC, there was an interview with a dev saying that they took inspiration from Al Qaeda beheadings and natural disasters and shit like that. I think Dog Days gives a better impression of what they're going for, as it's far more focused and clear in its presentation. Dead Men is a linear shooter for the most part, with serviceable if not amazing gameplay, and you are, without a hint of irony or comedy, a terrible person. IO's more famous series, Hitman, also has you as a contract killer killing terrible people, but that game has genuine quality in level design, some hilarious moments in gameplay, and you are incentivised to kill only the targets so you can be "the good guy", so to speak. Honestly, I don't know how realistic it is, tbh - it just seems dark more than anything. K&L is a far more realistic take on career criminals, and God does it show. The weird thing is, I love Vice City, and every single person in that game is an asshole too, but because so much of VC in particular and GTA in general is played for comedy, it doesn't seem as abrasive. The closest thing is Jenny, but to save her you have to betray Lynch, and she hates you for it. It's fascinating and deeply off-putting at the same time - on one hand, you are intrigued by where the plot could go, on the other, having no moral anchors in the game kinda makes you feel like you don't care if anyone - hell, everyone - died. well, Lynch is a barely-medicated psychopath, who is prone to shooting regular civilians because of his illness. Kane is given some personal emotion with his love for his daughter, but apart from that he's a pretty unrepentant career criminal, and Lynch. The old /r/patientgamers Essential Games ListĪ lot of action games have you play characters who are pretty terrible people, but it's never as obvious as Kane and Lynch.
